Place Victor Hugo is located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, which is the largest in the French capital in terms of surface area. It is also the district with the most consulates and Embassies. Likewise, there are many museums : the Museum of Modern Art, the Musée Marmottan Monet and the Palais Galliera, which is the fashion museum. Beloved by tourists, the 16th arrondissement is also home to the Palais de Tokyo, the Trocadero and the Bois de Boulogne. On 22 May 1885, the author of Les Misérables and Notre-Dame-de-Paris died in the City of Light. In December of the same year, a square in the 16th arrondissement was renamed Place Victor Hugo. Previously known as Place d'Eylau, it has subsequently been known as the Saint-Cloud rond-point, the Bassins rond-point, the La Plaine rond-point and even the Hippodrome's square. In the centre of this square, a 11-metre-high solid bronze with a stone base monument to Victor Hugo, created by Louis-Ernest Barrias, was unveiled in 1902, 100 years after the writer's birth.
But when the Second World War broke out, the bronze part was used to make weapons.
