The square is located at the end of Avenue d'Iéna, Rue de Lubeck, Rue de l'Amiral-d'Estaing, Rue Galilée and Rue Dumont-d'Urville. Rectangular in shape, it covers an area of approximately 10,000 m2, largely occupied by a public garden: Square Thomas-Jefferson.
It is served by line 6 at Boissière station.
This place was opened in 1866-1867 by the City of Paris on the site of the old Chaillot reservoirs, supplied by water from the Seine raised by steam pumps1. It absorbed rue de Juigné and part of rue de Belloy. It took its current name by an order of August 16, 1881. The establishment of the gardens located in the middle of the square was the subject of an order of August 21, 1885.
