Piazza di Spagna owes its name to the Palazzo di Spagna, home of the embassy of the Iberian State to the Holy See. The romantic center of 19th-century Rome, it immediately assumed a very important commercial role due to the presence of many hotels and homes inhabited by foreigners, attracted to this area by the representatives of the Spanish and French governments. Under the pontificate of Innocent XIII, and under the direction of the Roman architect Francesco De Santis, the Spanish Steps were built, a scenic connection between the slopes of the Pincio, dominated by the church of SS. Trinità, and the underlying Piazza di Spagna, which was a meeting place for all citizens; in fact, even today, the steps are a meeting place and gathering place, so much so that they are called the "drawing room of Rome".
