The origins of Desenzano seem to be traced back to the Bronze Age (XXI-XIX century BC), in the so-called civilization of Polada concentrated in the area between Veneto and Piedmont. In the arc of time between the first and second century AD a large number of wealthy people of Roman origin decided to put their roots there (witness some villas are still present in the town), it seems therefore reliable hypothesis that Decentius, owner of a farm and a villa of which you can visit the excavations, has given its name to the city of Desenzano.
In the middle of the fifteenth century it passed under the Republic of Venice, becoming a remarkable commercial center and experiencing a flourishing economic development determined by the wheat market (the market of Desenzano also provided local products including wine, fish and citrus fruits). Once Venice fell under Napoleon, the town was incorporated in the province of Brescia; at the beginning of the 19th century, during the Lombardy-Venetia Kingdom, it became a municipality. Witness of the First and Second World War, Desenzano del Garda was the field of bloody battles and saw its buildings largely destroyed by bombing.
