Historical Notes
Garlenda and Val Lerrone enter written history only starting from the early Middle Ages: as regards the previous eras we must think that s he followed the events of the nearby and more important city of Albenga. It is known that the jurisdiction of the Albingane brand had passed in 1091 to the Marquises of Clavesana, descendants of the aleramico Bonifacio Del Vasto, but the effective power of the Marquises over the city lasted well little. The municipality of Albenga already enjoyed in 1127 if only an autonomous policy with respect to the power of the marquis: this independence from feudal power, acquired in such a short period of time, is justifiable by the fact that, being a bishopric and coastal maritime center, it would have acquired such importance and prestige as to be able to compete with the ancient marquises.
In the city and in the countryside there were also numerous church properties that enjoyed conspicuous immunities that made feudal income increasingly thin: the Archbishop of Genoa, Siro, around the 1150 was no longer able to collect tithes regularly in western Liguria and his authority was continually questioned.
Not wanting that the municipality of Genoa could take advantage of the delicate situation, he preferred to cede many of his rights to those who were territorially closer to the west and could more easily exert pressure and authority on it. Siro therefore allowed the bishop of Albenga, Odoardo, on 13 April 1153 to invest Anselmo dei Quaranta or Quadraginta, progenitor of the Della Lengueglia and trusted relative of the Clavesana, of the tithes also of places previously subject to the same archbishop.
