A dominant position over the Valdinievole, the hill of Monsummano was fortified at least from the 11th century with a defensive system that was augmented and expanded over time until in the late Middle Ages it encompassed the entire hilltop. Monsummano is known for its precious hot springs, fed by warm waters that allow beneficial and relaxing baths. The special feature that distinguishes this place of relaxation, is the Giusti Grotto, an underground gallery kept in a centuries-old park, defined, by Giuseppe Verdi, as the eighth wonder of the world. Much loved by the Medici, Monsummano, was a favorite place for their hunting parties.
