Montecatini Val di Cecina is a small hill town and municipality in the province of Pisa. Located about 60 kilometers south of Pisa, the medieval town sits on the hill of Poggio la Croce overlooking the Val di Cecina just 15 kilometers from the town of Volterra.
In ancient times it was known as Monte Leone (Castrum Montis Leonis). Over the centuries it was long disputed between Pisa and Volterra, finally coming under the control of Florence in 1472. Montecatini's history is intimately linked to the nearby Caporciano copper mines-which became the largest in Europe in the 1800s-known and exploited since Etruscan times and active until the early 1900s.
Montecatini Val di Cecina still preserves a compact medieval core, with numerous testimonies. Among these we find the striking Belforti Tower.
