Near Mondello, the most famous seaside village of Palermo, there is another one that boasts a very interesting history.
Sferracavallo (Sferracavaddu) has an enviable position, right at the foot of the Capo Gallo promontory, on one side, and Monte Billiemi, on the other.
A good part of this territory falls within the Capo Gallo oriented reserve and the stretch of sea that bathes it falls within the “Capo Gallo” Marine Protected Area. Originally it was a fishing village in which there were two watchtowers, one from the 15th century and one from the 16th century. In the 17th century, the Morellos had acquired, together with some 'locks' in the Sferracavallo territory, the buildings of an old tuna factory (the so-called 'tonnarazza') including farmhouse and warehouses.
At the beginning of the 1900s, the tuna factories were enlarged (as demonstrated by some rooms on the ground floor with seventeenth-century barrel vaults) to take on their current appearance: on the sea side it maintains the imprint of a rustic building, with windows on the ground floor with round arch and rectangular windows on the first floor; at the top the facade is bordered by swallowtail battlements.
The property, of particular charm and in an absolutely privileged position, is clearly in need of total renovation and covers an area of 600 square meters immersed in a 2000 square meter garden.
