The house on the hill
VERGATO (Bologna). I couldn't believe it. When Fabiana called me and told me to look online to see her beautiful house, I couldn't believe my eyes!
I had no idea that in the Bolognese Apennines there were houses of such beauty in an almost Provençal style.
Or rather, in the area there are many beautiful and well-renovated houses, but I had never seen a renovation of this type.
So much so that after two days I was already there to see it in person.
To get there from my house you have to cross the Apennines a bit, but from Bologna it is very close, only 30 km: you can also get to Vergato by train if you want, and then it is only 10 minutes by car (about 6 km).
I leave the asphalt road for a dirt road that reminds me so much of Tuscany. After less than 100 meters, there is a parking lot on the right and on the left a wooden gate that delimits the house, but not the property.
There is an incredible silence here, you can only hear the rustling of the leaves in the wind.
I look around, the sky is clear and the vegetation is lush and green.
Then I open the gate and go in.
Immediately Fabiana's black horse that was grazing in the field on the left, curious, runs to see who has arrived.
Immediately after I hear Fabiana's 5 chihuahuas arriving who reach me barking curiously and eager for some caress.
The house is right there 100 meters away, I follow the path alongside the large centuries-old chestnut trees and I arrive at the building or rather the buildings.
On the ground only green grass, barely furrowed by the sign of the occasional passing vehicle.
I was telling you that there are three buildings: the first, on the right, is very pretty and from the road it looks like a hut mountain pasture, surrounded by a carpet of grass... You know those low huts with a sloping roof that you find in the Tagliole di Pievepelago and Fiumalbo or in the Alps. This hut here is partly furnished and used as a living room, partly still to be fixed. The roof is new.
I continue my green path and on the right, hidden by an enormous rose, there is the ground floor of the hut which from this side reveals itself to be a beautiful two-storey building today used as a tool shed which was once the chestnut dryer.
On the left, still hidden by another imposing rose, there is the building once used as a stable and barn. It is splendid, arranged on two levels, with a magnificent internal colonnade and vaulted ceilings in ancient bricks arranged in a herringbone pattern. Here the imagination takes flight... what could be created inside it? I have some ideas)
But I continue the story.
I approach the house, leaving the centuries-old chestnut trees behind me, and Fabiana comes towards me smiling. We greet each other and she leads me to her home, which also houses her small B&B.
We sit in the garden, around a table in the shade of the fig tree, and she begins to tell me the story of her house.
