History
The foundation of Alvor dates back to the 7th century B.C.. The Phoenicians, who turned it into a great economic centre and port of shelter due to its geographical position in the year 436 B.C, were followed by the Carthaginians, and it was later occupied by the Romans and in the year A.D 716 by the Moors. In the year 1189 D. Sancho I, conquered Alvor from the Moors. According to records, it was during the Phoenician occupation that the first fort was built on the site. Later, during the occupation of the Moors and faced with a context of great instability in the territory, a new fortress was built, the current Castle of
Alvor.
