Did you know that... at the time of the death of King Afonso V, when travelling from Obidos to Batalha, where the king's funeral ceremonies were to be held, D. Leonor, wife of King Joao II of Portugal, and her court passed by a group of people bathing in muddy and hot waters. Curious, the queen ordered the carriage to stop and asked the bathers why they were so crowded. After being told that these were healing waters, the queen wanted to try them out, as she herself suffered from an ailment, and was able to prove that these waters did indeed heal. The municipality was thus named Caldas da Rainha in her honour.
After this episode, D. Leonor ordered the construction of a hospital on that site, and the works were started the following year, a small settlement was also installed, and steps were taken to make it prosper and evolve. The hospital was named Nossa Senhora do Populo, as it was built to support the people. It was from this centre that the town was born and developed.
