The etymology of the toponym «Barcarena» is controversial, with several authors suggesting that it may be a corruption of the toponym «Alcanena». Barcarena is a place whose occupation dates back to the Late Neolithic, with constructions from the Chalcolithic period. It is the reference for a well-known settlement of populations to the place, and which originated at the top of the western slope overlooking the valley, it must have been more than 5,500 years ago, indicating an appreciable development based on an agro-pastoral economy. Barcarena is therefore a village with centuries of history, located in the valley of the Ribeira de Barcarena. The village extends along the east and west banks of the stream with the same name and is flanked by two symmetrical slopes, there are two hills with about 130 meters of altitude, located either on the east or west side of the village, while the entire valley extends from north to south, towards the Tagus estuary, with Cabo Espichel and the routes to the south of the Portuguese maritime coast on the horizon.
