The center of Port Covo was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755, from which now is the main square (Largo Marques de Pombal) inspired by the ideals of Pombaline architecture.
In the mid-18th century, it was a small settlement at the foot of a small bay. Covo refers to the fishing net for catching lobsters, and in the locality discovers good restaurants of fresh fish and seafood. It is still characterized as a small fishing community, but it is tourism that drives its growth.
In Largo, you discover good restaurants, souvenir shops and the Church dedicated to Our Lady of Soledade (patron saint of fishermen), from the 18th century in rococo style.
The parties in honor of Our Lady of Soledade take place on the last weekend of August, with various musical and traditional events. On the 29th there is Bath 29, an ancient tradition that materializes in a dive at 7 am.
Pessegueiro Island Beach is a 10-minute drive from the center of Porto Covo. It's a vast, watched-in sand with a blue flag. It is one of the most popular beaches in this area, attracting tourists, water sports practitioners and sport fishermen.
On the horizon is the island of Pessegueiro, which inspired the musician Rui Veloso to write a composition. In summer, tourists, mostly Portuguese, visit the island.
The peach island is totally uninhabited, kingdom of seagulls. Unlike rui velos' famous music, Peach trees never existed on the island, but it was one of the first centers of human activity in the region. The first settlements date back to the Cargian trade.
