'The 'princess of Lima' rose to the city much later, on January 20, 1848, by the hand of D. Maria II, at a time when it was already an important maritime trading post that was later reinforced with shipbuilding and cod fishing. The greatest symbol of this land's relationship with the sea is the sea-facing statue of a woman with undulating clothes and a caravel in her hands. At its feet are represented the four corners of the world to which its sailors have traveled.
Currently, Viana continues to face the sea, with the bet on the blue economy and renewable energies, and on land it demonstrates to give cards in the business attraction that has crowded its various industrial parks.
The heart of Viana do Castelo was administratively linked to Meadela in 2013, giving birth to the largest parish of Alto Minho with about 25 thousand inhabitants. The Feast of Our 'Nossa Senhora d'Agonia' is considered the largest pilgrimage in the country during which Viana projects to the world the traditions of this vibrant region where, from the top of the mount of 'Santa Luzia', the temple of the 'Sagrado Coracao' de Jesus is magnanimously imposed. In sports, clubs such as Viana Taurino and SC Vianense were pioneers in the practice of various modalities. Currently the highlight goes to the 'Escola Desportiva de Viana', Viana Tennis Club, the nautical sports clubs, which have added champions after champions, and the participations in the maximum national level of teams of the Volleyball Club of Viana and Youth of Viana, in roller hockey.'
