Cyril Mendjisky

From a line of recognized artists, Cyril Mendjisky has carved a name for himself in the field of contemporary art. He has just inaugurated his new studio in Saint-Paul, an unusual setting reflecting his prolific world. By Radia Amar

Cyril Mendjisky’s new studio was originally a sheep-fold. Hollowed out of the rock, this unusual setting is just like the work of this talented artist who finds here a showcase of unpolished charm. Recent offerings are displayed here by this artist with a predilection for metal. “I never do any sketches. It’s the contact with the material which inspires a form and governs my gestures,” explains this visionary sculptor, capable of producing a graceful dancer, a Maasai warrior, a goat, a bouquet of flowers, musical instruments or a stylized golfer all from a pile of scrap metal. A Jack-of-all-trades and a fan of “récup’” when he tries his hand at collages, he succeeds in eliciting emotion by combining strips of old posters which add a colourful atmosphere to his remarkable platforms in relief. Naturally inspired by Cubism, Cyril Mendjisky does not belong to any trend or group, preferring to follow his own instinct. Not drawn to colour until recently, he is now working on the theme of the shimmering butterfly. A new departure for this artist with a real following, who finds in this studio an unprecedented source of inspiration, the promise of astonishing works soon to be discovered. His next exhibition will be in October 2014, in the Private Banking agency of the Société Générale in Monaco.
