Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI Quattro, a high-powered convertible

The 525 hp V10 engine allows you to chalk up the sacrosanct 0 to 100 km/hr in 4.1 seconds and experience a top speed of 313 km/hr. The German model owes these feats to a combination of particularly well-dosed technologies. Power at the flick of wrist, for a taste of La Dolce Vita…

Its sleek curves reflect the breathtaking performance and agility of this model sporting the four linked rings. Wide curved air intakes, elongated back, a muscular profile… The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro is certainly not lacking in personality. For the rear flanks, priority has been given to a reinforced carbon fiber composite material, also used for the compartment protecting the hood when it is folded back. Made of fabric, silent and perfect even at very high speeds, the hood in fact weighs only 42 kilos. The R8 Spyder’s overall weight has been reduced and its centre of gravity lowered. Up to 50 km/hr, it takes just 19 seconds to open or close the hood. Weighing only 216 kilos on the scales, the aluminium shell, designed on the ASF (Audi Space Frame) principle, has been strengthened at strategic points. In the version fitted with a manual gearbox, the car weighs in at a commendable 1,720 kilos.

Highly responsive, the V10 engine with aluminum block-cylinders is equipped with direct fuel and air injection technology, ensuring that exhilarating power and energy savings are on the programme. Dry sump greasing, a system inspired by car racing, provides just the right amount of oil whatever the rate of acceleration required of the car. By request, the

R8 Spyder can be fitted with R Tronic® sequential 6-speed transmission in automatic or manual mode. In just a few seconds, the shock absorbers adapt to specific road conditions and driving styles.

Fitted out in leather and aluminum, the two-seater offers a spacious interior, both simple and refined. If anything overweight has been banished, elegance has certainly not been sacrificed : another hallmark of the German brand. Adjustable seats provide passengers with impeccable comfort and support. The control panel follows a clear and logical structure. The rear provides storage space with three compartments, while a 100-liter trunk accommodates luggage at the front. Other equipment includes : a steering wheel with a flat base, Bang & Olufsen audio system, headlight units fitted with LEDs, automatic air conditioning and heated seats. Fans of phoning while driving - hands-free, as per the law - can opt for a microphone incorporated into the seat belt : a world first, with excellent sound quality even with the hood down on the motorway.

Tests have followed in quick succession and compliments have rained down from the automotive press : imperturbable behaviour and road handling, unden-iable driving pleasure and exemplary classiness. The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro apparently has no defects, except “a gearbox slightly lacking in responsiveness”, as one reads in an otherwise rave review, and “a hefty price-tag” according to the trade. But ultimately, isn’t the price of excellence the amount that the happy few are willing to pay, determined to hear the roar of this convertible with the four rings ?
