Jaguar F-Type, racy good looks and high performance
Presented at the Paris Motor Show, this 2-seater convertible immediately sets the tone. With its front engine and rear 2-wheel drive, the F-Type offers real agility, perpetuating the Jaguar tradition launched 75 years ago.
Jaguar, which pioneered the use of the mono-bodyshell, is a past-master in aluminium. Light and rigid, the structure is fitted with front and rear double A-arm suspension, also in cast aluminium, and a direct steering rack, all attributes guaranteeing instant response. On the scales, it weighs in at only 261 kg, for a total weight of 1,597 kg. High-resistance plastic has been used for lateral protection and the trunk. The F-Type is available with three supercharged petrol engines providing 340, 380 and 495 hp. The V8 S leaps from 0 to100 km/hr in 4.3 seconds and attains a top speed of 300 km/hr, with CO2 emissions of 259 g/km. Like the S, this model offers more involvement for the driver, thanks to its active exhaust system. From 3,000 rpm, the F-Type's soundtrack comes into play !
As for design, it follows the lineage of the graceful Jaguar, giving precedence to powerful curves and uncluttered lines. Inspired by the C-X16 concept discovered in 2011, the car has an angular front and embossed hood. The bi-xenon headlights and day lights enhance its shark-like profile. The rear swells before disappearing in a low, sensual line. The spoiler rises to restrain any lift. More than half of the materials used have been recycled. Sustainable development also prevails in the choice of the assembly process, which generates 80 % less CO2 than steel welding.
A racy feel is also found in the asymmetrical passenger compartment, where the driver gets privileged treatment. Like in a fighter plane, the controls incorporated into the dashboard are arranged functionally and ergonomically. The Stop/Start system cuts off the engine when the driver keeps his foot on the brake, and restarts once pressure is removed from the pedal. To be commercialised in the spring of 2013, the Jaguar F-Type starts at 73,800 €, 85,400 € for the S version and 100,500 € for the V8 S.
