Mercedes SLS AMG roadster : awesome !

A V8 engine, 571 hp, dazzling design and a price guaranteeing rarity, this new roadster has benefited from meticulous development on the part of AMG engineers.


It’s true that the fixed roof and butterfly doors on the 2009 coupé version have disappeared, which may sadden those with nostalgia for the model. But they will probably be consoled on learning that this has in no way affected the car’s stability and even less, its charm… To obtain dynamic driving identical to that of the coupé, and despite the absence of a fixed roof, Affalterbach specialists have relied on a more rigid body with, among other things, more robust side skirts, thicker walls and reinforced cross members (under the dashboard, between the top and the tank, behind the seats…). As for charm, its disproportionately long hood (almost half of its length of 4.638 m !) inevitably draws the eye. The entire design of this superb model recalls that it is “a true sports car, just like the coupe”, as confirmed by Tobias Moers, in charge of development for AMG. In addition to the overall rigidity, the design team has focused particular­ly on the roof and the “noise-vibration-robustness” trio. The top, comprised of three layers of fabric, folds back accordion-style behind the seats, in just eleven seconds (up to 50 km/hr) by means of simple pressure on the electro-hydraulic command. Open or closed, it never interferes with driving enjoyment. The slightest vibration, any snapping or clicking has been hunted down relentlessly. All potential nuisances - water, sand, dust, heat or cold - were used in the merciless battery of tests to which the roof has been subjected. Result : it is flawless ! Mission accomplished also for all requirements in terms of sound quality. The very design of the aluminum structure has helped to avoid usual vibration dampers which tend to increase the vehicle’s weight. Perfect integration of the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG sound system with its two speakers offers optimal listening pleasure. A real joy to listen to, just like the hum of the engine and roar of the exhaust, pushed to the legal limit. Because its engine, with seven gears and double clutch, is in fact a true work of art. The AMG Drive Unit comprises the practical novelty in the passenger compartment. With the E-Select lever, the driver passes to mode P, R, N or D with the lightest touch. The parking position goes into effect automatically when he cuts off the engine. The Drive Unit also includes the engine start key, ESP® functions and even the AMG memory function. The very comfortable seats are fitted with the Airscarf, a system to warm the neck like an invisible scarf and extending the convertible’s summer season. At the price of 209,000 €, what could be more legitimate than wanting to enjoy the roadster for as long as possible ?
