Porsche 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Targa 4
More than one out of every three buyers of a Porsche 911 opt for all-wheel drive. The 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Targa 4 both promise an extra dose of agility and comfort synonymous with the last-generation 911.
Highly innovative, the turbocharged engines have gained in power and fuel efficiency, while the all-wheel drive system enhances traction and safety. Fitted as standard and lowering ride height by 10 mm, the Porsche Active Suspension Management system contributes towards the driving experience. Drive wheels, also optional on 4S models, complete the picture.
Styling has not been forgotten. As witnessed by a three-dimensional light strip between the tail-lights, and a rear body widened by 44 mm. Other telling details include : four-point daytime running lights, door handles without recess covers, a redesigned rear deck-lid with vertical louvers, and new rear lights with four-point brake lights. As in the original model, the silhouette of the elegant 911 Targa has a wide bar in place and stead of central pillars, a retractable roof section above the front seats, and a wrap-around rear window.
Backed by the manufacturer’s four decades of experience with turbocharged engines, the Boxers live up to their double promise of faster acceleration and consumption reduced by up to 12 %. The 911 Carrera 4 and Targa 4 boast 370 hp beneath their hoods, while the S models attain 420 hp thanks to modifications to the turbochargers, exhaust system and optimized electronic engine management system. An array of equipment enabling the all-wheel drive 911 Carrera 4 to accelerate better than its two-wheel drive counterpart. It sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds (3.8 seconds in the case of the S), whereas the Cabriolets and 911 Targa 4s take 0.2 seconds longer. Its top speed ranges from 287 to 305 km/h. The best fuel savings can be claimed by the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet and 911 Targa 4S, both equipped with PDK transmission, offering consumption of 8 l/100 km and savings of 1.2 litres.
It is then up to owners to select their driving mode using a rotary dial on the steering wheel indicating “Normal”, “Sport”, “Sport Plus” and “Individual”. The latter allowing the owner to set up his own configuration of the various parameters, for example : shock absorbers, suspension, PDK shifting strategy...
The 7” touchscreen on the central console provides access to the standard PCM connectivity and infotainment system. Real-time traffic conditions in the immediate vicinity and along the route, a choice of telephony solutions via WiFi, bluetooth or cable, consultation of vehicle-related services, Internet radio stations... The car is indeed remarkably smart.
