The new Boxster, sleek and agile
Designed in the classic Porsche tradition, the new-generation Boxster, all finesse and sobriety, proposes a wealth of innovations. Starting with bodywork in light alloy and a chassis revised for the occasion. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since 1996…
The first Boxster did not win unanimous approval from Porsche enthusiasts. It wasn’t until it was up-dated in 2005 that they finally accepted the model. In fact, the number of cars produced since its launch is very telling. The adjective “legendary” is now fully justified. The wheelbase of the latest offering in the Boxster range, the third of the name, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, is elongated, while the gauges and wheel-rims have been widened. Its weight has been reduced to 1,310 kg. These changes, added to the brand new electro-mechanical steering, contribute to the improvement of the model’s driving dynamics. It leaps from zero to 100 km/hr in only 5 seconds, while consumption has dropped by 15 % to about 8 litres/100 km.
The Boxster’s new technical advantages are echoed in its look : “sleek and expressive”, says the prestigious brand. Reduced overhang and a low, raked windscreen are on the programme of this very alluring model, whose roof can be lowered and closed in just 9 seconds, even at 60 km/hr. The headlights, side contours, bumpers and wheel arches have all been redesigned. Driver and passenger comfort has not, however, been sacrificed, as the new Boxster’s interior is more spacious. The sloping central console, a recent improvement it owes to the Carrera GT, cocoons the driver and makes for more ergonomic gearshifts. Finally, purists will appreciate the quality of the overstitched leather.
Fans can choose from two models, the Boxster and Boxster S, with 6-speed manual gearboxes, horizontal 6-cylinder direct fuel injection engines and an electrical recuperation system. The first 2.7-litre model provides 265 hp, the second 3.4-litre model 315 hp. The car’s very modern appearance in no way detracts from its performance, more economical than its predecessors. “Ambitious and accomplished”, comment the specialists from the Stuttgart-based manufacturers. This roadster with its sensual curves is certainly not lacking in arguments. On sale from April 19th.
