A property in modernist style in the 16th arrondissement
Within the walls of a former artist’s studio at the entrance to the Bois de Boulogne in the 16th arrondissement, this sublime property crowned by a cube of glass and steel draws the gaze of passers-by. Designed by talented architect Joseph Karam, this residence on seven floors stands out for its spectacular proportions and brilliantly orchestrated esthetics.
Architect Joseph Karam had to wait 10 years before his dream came true ! The result is a remarkable esthetic achievement. The tone is set in the living-room with its ceiling attaining a height of 7 metres and an industrial staircase running around the cage of a monumental elevator in Haussmann style. Enveloped in white with a grey marble floor, this room basking in light offers audacious volumes and impressive windows with their original glass panes overlooking the landscaped garden. On the wall of the hearth, a collection of pottery from the Parthian era (3rd century B.C.) has found refuge in the illuminated niches. At the tocuh of a finger, the hearth splits in two to reveal a bank of TV and video-surveillance screens. A sculpture depicting a 2nd-C. Roman senator is majestically enthroned next to a sofa and benchseat designed by the master of the house, overlooked by a monumental mirror. Further on, a dining area precedes the ultra-functional kitchen, which opens out to a small garden. On the first floor, a small oriental sitting-room on the mezzanine faces a bedroom with shower room. The second and third floors are devoted to two large master bedrooms with walk-in closets and dens. A picture window the height of the two floors draws the bedrooms towards the exterior, to enjoy the view of the Bois de Boulogne. In one of these bedrooms, a curious white cloud floats in the air, again hiding a television screen ! A dedicated fan of technology, Joseph Karam has used hi-tech items throughout the living space while preserving the property’s original character : home automation, a heating system behind the walls... On the top floor, a sublime “island” with palms, cacti and pine-trees follows on from the winter garden with its skylight... Below the property, on level -1 lit by tall windows, one finds a recreation room, movie lounge and an independent studio. More technical, level -2 accommodates a laundry room and wine cellar. Everything demonstrates astonishing inventiveness. “Intended for a fan of architecture and design, this property is something of an exception in Paris for both its historic character and its warm minimalism,” comments Valérie Uzzan, who is handling the property’s sale. “Unique in many ways, it is perhaps most striking for its spectacular volumes, magnificent Haussmann elevator, landscaped roof-terrace, and its use of technology.”
