Specialists say that his work is reminiscent of Ernest Pignon-Ernest. Philippe Gourdon, contemporary artist, replaces canvas with marble and works on it like a sculptor, though he uses a paint-brush to delineate faces, bodies and poses. Originally an art director for various magazines, he then became a composer-performer of music for films and television. After a stint in the studios devoted to nude drawings on the Place des Vosges in Paris (where he learnt the basics of academic drawing), he began to create, exhibit and decided to settle on the Côte d’Azur, in Cannes to be precise. “I paint what I love, the game of love. I try to be freer in my drawing, more fluid, less academic, to let the emotion come across.” He also investigated the possibility of creating (artistic) furniture… Such as a marble table, partly painted. He has to go to Carrara to find the perfect piece of marble, then tackle the work itself. A unique piece, of course. Which will quite probably open up the way for others. Philippe Gourdon has no shortage of ideas or enthusiasm. 436 rue Saint-Sauveur (06 11 10 26 34).
