BIARRITZ : BASQUE TREASURE

Often called “La French California”, Biarritz is a real gem of a town in the south-west, known for its authentic loveliness. Its kilometres of beaches, surrounding countryside and closeness to Spain all ensure an exceptionally delightful lifestyle and wordwide appeal.

A cradle of serenity, Biarritz has acquired over the years a reputation as a haven, prized by city-dwellers in search of nature and a laid-back atmosphere. A niche market and a cocoon preserved from the turbulence impacting the rest of France, its luxury segment is characterized by a stately ambiance, as described by Thibaut Longuefosse, Manager of MyBiarritz Property :

“Biarritz is a niche within a niche. Here, the luxury sector is oblivious to the crisis and “picture-postcard” properties sell for spectacular prices with very short turnarounds. After the pandemic and extraordinary years marked by a rare buying frenzy, we thought this winter that the party was over : nothing of the kind ! Sales in the high-end sector are soaring again”.

An observation shared by Philippe Thomine-Desmazures, Manager of the Barnes agency in Biarritz : “In Biarritz, the luxury segment follows the share prices of Hermès, LVMH and Kering, whose value never ceases to rise. This sector ignores inflation and rising interest rates, whereas these factors perturb the mid-range market. Prices continue to rise, less dramatically than in the past few years, but pursuing their ascension nevertheless. Furthermore, the decline of the euro versus the dollar favours Americans and we are again in touch with an international clientele”.

Yet again, Biarritz is in the spotlight, with a French clientele also on board. “The number of French buyers is on the rise and requests for year-round homes reflect the same momentum, in parallel to the international clientele and the market for second residences, as lively as ever,” says Bénédicte Marchal, Manageress of the Biarritz Sotheby’s International Realty agency. “A younger population is settling year-round in Biarritz, drawn by the lifestyle on the Basque coast. While a wait-and-see attitude still affects the other end of the market, the luxury segment is as buoyant as ever, with high-end properties selling very quickly.”
