Miami, Art Deco style in South Beach

While its name unfailingly conjures up idyllic beaches and sparkling nightlife, Miami is also, and increasingly, a town of art and culture, endowed with a remarkable architectural legacy in Art Deco style.

Since the 1920’s, Miami has succeeded in asserting itself as a trendsetter. Today, creative effervescence still adds vibrance to the town, as witnessed by the wide diversity of museums that have been opened over the past few years. Built on the seafront in Miami Beach in the early 1930's, the Art Deco District, extending from the pedestrian Lincoln Avenue to 5th Street, is the largest Art Deco neighbourhood in the world, testifying to the boundless imagination of architects at the time. Initiated in Paris in 1925, the Art Deco style first saw itself as futuristic. In Florida, the Tropical Art Deco style characterized by pastel colours offers a unique heritage. To date, the municipality has classified more than 800 buildings. Widely mediatized in the 1980’s by the popular TV series “Miami Vice”, this architectural style is now Miami’s visiting card.
