Mykonos, pearl of the Cyclades
A living picture-postcard, Greece's very own Saint-Tropez is still seen as a glamorous island dotted with little white houses with blue shutters and hotels offering casual-chic luxury, right at the water's edge.
Until the1950's, Mykonos was just a simple little island inhabited by a few humble fishermen and craftsmen. Caught in the spotlight thanks to parties thrown in the 'sixties by the famous shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, it gradually became an address highly-prized by the international jet-set, many of whom bought holiday homes here. With the exception of the capital, Chora, the island's architecture is characterized by houses in the shape of small white cubes with narrow little streets lined by a few buildings in medieval style. Still going strong, the island's festive reputation festive takes the form of a dense concentration of trendy bars and clubs, and lots of beach parties organized throughout the summer. On the other hand, the rest of the island is like a well-preserved garden of Eden where unspoilt nature runs along idyllic beaches. As if in the midst of scenery conjuring up a Mediterranean Ireland, luxury hotels in minimalist style have sprung up to offer charming ports-of-call with panoramic views of land and sea.
